I specialise in data management software for small charities and social impact organisations, helping them to protect sensitive data, monitor outcomes and manage their impact. I can tailor my approach to suit your needs and budget, using agile project management and creative software architecture to keep you in full control of your costs throughout, even while embracing the inevitable changes in scope and design that occur during software development.
I am currently working on a new casework and impact management platform to make data management, analysis and reporting easier for social sector organisations. I want to make this a toolkit that helps as many organisations as possible, so if you deal with any of the above then please get in touch and tell me what would make this useful for you. I'd love to know what sort of data you store, what analysis you perform or wish you could, and how you report to funders.
I am a software developer with a passion for ethics and sustainability. My values are explained in detail on the values page of my company website.
Through 7 years working for software companies, I grew disillusioned with the industry's relentless focus on growth at the expense of employees, colleagues and long-standing customers.
I created my own company in 2017 because I wanted my work to have meaning beyond income. I pursued ethically motivated projects with local charities and heard common complaints about technology from nearly everyone I spoke to. Across the social sector, people lacked the skills, knowledge or time to make effective use of data and couldn't find appropriate software to help them.
That's why my main focus today is developing a cloud platform to help small charities create effective data strategies, collect the right data and evaluate outcomes to better understand and grow their impact.
Get in touch if you need help understanding, managing or benefitting from data. I may be able to meet your needs with the platform I'm developing, or I might be able to do something bespoke for you. Either way, I'll work hard to find a solution that's affordable and meets all of your needs.
I have worked as a software developer for ten years, the first six as an employee of several software-as-a-service businesses. I have since set up my own business and delivered projects for several freelance clients.
For example, I designed and delivered a client database for the Ways to Wellbeing social prescribing service, which is run out of York CVS. This database enabled the service to efficiently manage its casework while expanding from one to several practitioners and taking on many more clients.
I then worked with Defra on the early stages of its Future Farming and Countryside programme. My main focus there was to set up a modern software delivery platform that took advantage of recent innovations in software engineering and deployment tools to provide a robust and scalable backbone for online services.
I am now focused primarily on a product of my own, with which I aim to help small charities and other social sector organisations improve their use of data and increase their social impact.
I am excited to work with any environmentally or socially motivated organisation to help them maximise their impact through the effective use of data and software. I enjoy technical challenges as much as anyone in the tech industry but my biggest motivation is to see the delight I can bring end-users, no matter how simple or complex their needs are.
I am a strong advocate for agile project management, breaking down projects into manageable chunks and delivering value incrementally so that end-users can see the product taking shape and give feedback throughout the process. This ensures that every bit of software I develop not only matches an up-front specification but actually reflects the client's real needs at the point of delivery.
