- Giles Metcalfe – Ethical Freelance Digital Marketer

As a self-employed Freelance Ethical Digital Marketing Specialist, I help you sell your products and services to people using ethical marketing techniques and with sustainability very much in mind.
I do this in the "right way" - i.e. using ethical marketing techniques and business practices, and only working with clients and colleagues who match my own core values.
An ethical marketer with sustainability and good business practices in mind, putting the person before the sale, I'm an FSB Member and Good Business Charter accredited. I've also taken the Ethical Move Pledge.
If you own a website or are thinking of creating one, you should be mindful about its ecological and carbon footprint. The carbon footprint of a website has been "a thing" since around 2018 but it's still not that well-known. I'm trying to change that.
As we all face climate change, we can take a small step that makes a big impact - create a low carbon website. Luckily, there are some simple steps you can take to make your website leaner and greener. Some of these changes even have the bonus of offering better SEO and customer experience too. Book your guided Website Sustainability Audit Session with me and find out how.

As well as working directly with my own client base, I'm looking to partner up with other like-minded Freelancers and agencies to expand and extend our offering. I also want to work with more ethical businesses and learn from them to build on the steps I'm taking to be more conscious and reduce my carbon footprint.
"You either have to be part of the solution, or you're going to be part of the problem."
Schedule a Call or Zoom with me via Calendly. Answer a few straightforward questions on what you want to talk to me about and you’ll be routed to the right event type.
Giles Metcalfe Digital is only successful if your business is too, but there are some businesses I’ll work with and some I won’t. My Ethical Policy sets out my commitment to ethical digital marketing and how I go about screening clients and projects.
A question I’ve been asked recently is “what is Ethical Marketing and what makes you an Ethical Digital Marketer?” Good point. For me, it’s respecting people as people and not merely seeing them as faceless consumers, customer types or personas; having principles and sticking to them; doing things in the right way; and showing this by walking the walk as well as talking the talk.
Ethical Marketing helps brands differentiate and build trust, and the same applies to Freelancers and practitioners too.
I’ve taken the Ethical Move Pledge, and I am committed to the following promises:
As an Ethical Marketer, I put the person before the sale.
I respect you and your privacy, and I will help you make the best choice for your needs, not mine.
As an individual, I will communicate inclusively, truthfully, and clearly.
I will not confuse you or hide information from you. I will help all audiences feel welcome.
As a Freelancer, I take responsibility for my part in changing the marketplace.
I recognise the need to break the cycle of consumerism. In addition to taking a stand on which platforms I use, I will continuously review my sales and marketing techniques and best practice to ensure they benefit the common good.
Accountability
I’m asking you to hold me accountable. Please reach out to me if you see me not honouring my pledge.
As an Ethical Freelancer, I’m also working on making my business more sustainable.
Sustainability and sustainable business mean different things to different people. It can mean both doing business sustainably, and having a business that is sustainable. One definition of sustainability refers to “doing business without negatively impacting the environment, community, or society as a whole.” Another definition of sustainability refers to “the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time.”
For me, it covers:
- My carbon footprint, and reducing and offsetting it
- The platforms I’m active on and work with
- How my business impacts others and the planet
- The affect it has on my own – as well as my colleagues’ and clients’ – health and wellbeing too
